Taking a Break
Respite provides caregivers a break from their daily responsibilities and can cover a wide range of services based upon the unique needs of the caregiver.
Respite for the caregiver includes:
- Giving the caregiver a short break for a doctor’s appointment or to go shopping
- Allowing the caregiver the opportunity to nap, bathe, or otherwise rejuvenate
- A break to attend a church service or see a movie
- Taking a much needed vacation
- Pampering oneself with a hair appointment or manicure
- Scheduling medical appointments
- Simply visiting friends or other family members
However you choose to take a break, make sure you do it often enough to maintain a healthy balance between caregiving and your personal needs.
What are my options?
Many Senior Living Communities offer short term stays that include 24/7 care and assistance. This is a great option for those who are recovering from an injury or surgery and need more time to transition between the Hospital, Skilled Nursing Facility, and home. Adult Day Care facilities are flexible options for caregivers to schedule regular respite for their loved one. These facilities can provide care, such as medication assistance, toileting, and bathing, as well as socialization and entertainment. In-Home Care is another excellent option to provide a break for caregivers. Home Care agencies provide trained staff who you schedule to come into the home of your loved one and provide one on one care. They can be scheduled for as little as 1 hour a day, to 24/7.
