They Say That One Bad Apple Spoils The Bunch
And I have found this to be mostly true, especially within a group of caregivers. Our caregivers are some of the most giving, hardworking, and loving people that we come into contact with on a regular basis, so why is it that a seemingly great team can sour within a matter of days?
I have learned this lesson the hard way throughout each of my buildings. One bad apple can sour the whole group, or at least a few good caregivers; and when we are running thin on the floor as it is, every body counts! It can be difficult to keep your spirits up when enduring such backbreaking work day in and day out. When a Negative Nancy, or worse, No-Show Nelly joins your Team you begin fighting a battle that you are likely to lose. Sure, you can sit your Negative Nancy down for a one-on-one, or throw your No-Show Nelly a few write-ups, but if that cycle continues it is time to throw that apple out before she sours the bunch! Why? Because the alternative is worse, your team views you as a negligent manager who doesn’t have the hutzpah to stand up for the Team and do what’s right in the face of adversity.
You may have to work the floor until a new hire is ready and trained or you may have to hire an outside Caregiving Agency for relief, but I guarantee you that a sour apple on the floor is not better than nothing! A happy and functional Team is the only way that we are going to be able to reduce turn over, increase job satisfaction, and provide the best possible care for our residents whom we love so much.
